John Donne was born on 22nd January 1572 in London, England and died on 31 March 1631 at the age of 59 in London, England. He was an English poet, lawyer, and cleric in the Church of England. Donne secretly married Anne More with whom he had 12 children.
He is also called a metaphysical poet. Donne was the founder of a new kind of lyric which for want of better name has been called ' the metaphysical lyric. Donne introduced a new realism in love poetry, revolting against the Petrarchan tradition. He also introduced colloquial language in love poetry. Donne's services to lyrical poetry were as valuable as that of Shakespeare to Drama.
